Veteran defender Clayton Failla has left Mosta and agreed a move to Premier League rivals Gżira United.

The 39-year-old announced on Thursday that after five years he had decided to part ways with Mosta FC and seek pastures new.

On Thursday afternoon, Failla was announced as a new Gżira United player after putting pen to paper on a one-year deal.

“Clayton Failla is a Maroon,” the Premier League club said in a statement.

“Maltese football legend left fullback Clayton Failla signed a one-year contract with our club. More known as Failla needs no introduction for Maltese football lovers.

“He is a two-time Malta Player of the Year winner and played 55 times with Malta national team scoring two goals.

“He played 488 matches in local and international matches with local Maltese clubs, scoring 134 goals. Last season played with Mosta FC.”

On his part, Gżira United president Sharlon Pace said that he took little time to approach the veteran defender as he felt he could give much-needed experience to his team.

“As soon Marlon (Galea) told me about Clayton being a free player I immediately gave the go ahead for this signing. Clayton will give us experience, personality in the dressing room and the pitch.

“Together with Mentz and Samu (Maxuell Maia) he will help our youngsters to grow and perform.

“In the past years we had good results with players of this kind like Andrew Cohen, Roderick Briffa and Justin Haber and I’m sure Clayton will be an asset to help us reaching our goals.”
