Birkirkara clinched a remarkable 1-0 victory over Moldova’s Petrocub in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League first qualifying round, thanks to a solo goal from debutant Geoffrey Acheampong.
It is a dream start to this season’s European adventure for the Maltese side, who took the upper hand in the tie against a team that featured in the group stages of this same competition last season. The return leg is scheduled for next week, but this result gives Stefano De Angelis’ team a significant morale boost heading into the deciding second leg.
De Angelis handed immediate debuts to his summer signings, opting for a bold 3-4-3 formation, at least on paper, which actually turned out to be more of a 3-5-2 but with Acheampong given the license to operate close to the attacking tandem.
Former Real Madrid youth goalkeeper Miguel Martinez started between the posts, protected by a back three of Stefan Marjanovic – another summer signing, Luis Cordova, and Neil Micallef. Marcos Maydana slotted in as left wing-back, while Acheampong joined Lucas Macula and Franklin Sasere in the front line.
Also making headlines off the field was the return of ex-player Roderick Briffa, who was appointed sporting director just days after announcing his retirement from football.
Meanwhile, Petrocub, who lined up in a 3-5-2 system, came into the match with a physical advantage, having already played three domestic league matches. Their European experience showed early on, as they tried to assert control through the midfield.
From the start, Birkirkara pressed high up the pitch, forcing the Moldovan side to resort to long balls from the back.
The visitors threatened first, with Teodor Lungu’s long-range effort sailing over the bar. Victor Bogaciuc followed with two close attempts – a low volley and a glancing header from a set-piece – both narrowly missing the target.
Birkirkara’s pressing game nearly paid off on 21 minutes when Acheampong won possession high up the pitch, but his shot was deflected for a corner. The Stripes showed confidence and physical presence up front, frequently drawing fouls and keeping Petrocub’s defence alert.
Petrocub had a golden opportunity in the 26th minute, when Petru Popescu was left unmarked from a throw-in, but his finish went wide – a major let-off for Birkirkara. The Moldovans began to show their quality with quick transitions and vertical play, with Nicolae Rotaru forcing a solid save from Martinez following a slick passing move.
The Birkirkara goalkeeper had to be alert again shortly before half-time, timing a crucial rush off his line to block Popescu’s one-on-one effort.
Martinez proved his worth with composure and excellent reading of the game.
The second half resumed without personnel changes, though the match remained disjointed by frequent fouls.
However, Birkirkara did manage to forge ahead with Acheampong capitalising on his advanced role, breaking through early in the second half to net the winner.
In the 54th minute, the former Sliema Wanderers latched onto a loose ball in the final third, powered his way into the box, and calmly slotted home the opener.
With the lead in hand, Birkirkara focused on game management. Sasere, in particular, was instrumental in drawing fouls and relieving pressure during Petrocub’s attempts to regain momentum.
The Moldovan side responded by changing both strikers, with substitute Mihai Lupan nearly equalising with a low shot that skidded just wide.
Lungu also went close with a free-kick ten minutes from time, but the ball missed the target, much to the relief of the home fans.
The second leg in Moldova promises a stern test, but this result places Birkirkara in a commanding position as they look to advance to the second qualifying round.
