Former Birkirkara FC president Victor Zammit dies

Steered the Stripes to 18 major honours in Maltese football

Maltese football was in mourning on Wednesday afternoon following the news of the death of former Birkirkara FC president Victor Zammit.

Zammit was a catalyst behind Birkirkara’s revival in Maltese football in the 1990s and the early 2000 as he led the club to 18 domestic triumphs, but more importantly, putting the Stripes on solid foundations.

In a statement, Birkirkara FC issued a statement to honour their former president.

“Birkirkara FC is deeply saddened by the passing of former Club President, Mr Victor Zammit,” the club said in a statement.

“Mr Zammit served as President from 1998 to 2009, a period that marked a turning point in the Club’s history. Mr. Zammit transformed Birkirkara from a fringe side into a team capable of beating any Maltese opposition.

“Under his leadership, the Club won no fewer than eighteen honours – including two Premier League titles, four FA Trophies, and five Super Cups. He will always be remembered for guiding the Club to its first major successes and laying the foundation for years to come.

“Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this time.”

Birkirkara FC, who are currently in Moldova preparing for Thursday’s UEFA Confernece League clash against FC Petrocub, announced that their players will be wearing a black armband as a sign of respect in the memory of their former president.

The Malta Football Association also paid tribute to Zammit’s contribution to Maltese football.

“The Malta FA is deeply saddened by the passing of Victor Zammit, former Birkirkara FC President,” it said in a statement.

“During his 11-year spell as President, Birkirkara won a total of 18 honours, with this signalling a turning point in the Stripes’ history.

“Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.”
