Birkirkara failed to build on their first-leg victory as they succumbed to a 3-0 defeat against FC Petrocub, crashing out of the UEFA Conference League 3-1 on aggregate.

It was a disappointing end to Birkirkara’s European journey, as Petrocub’s attacking adjustments and clinical finishing proved too much for the Maltese outfit to overcome.

Before the match, a minute of silence was observed in memory of former Birkirkara president Victor Zammit, who passed away on Wednesday. The tribute took place at the Moldova national team stadium in Chisinau, where the second leg was held.

Birkirkara coach Stefano De Angelis opted for just one change to his starting formation, with Malta international forward Kemar Reid replacing Lucas Macula in the attacking line.

Petrocub, on the other hand, made several changes from their first-leg side, particularly in the final third.

Both Petru Popescu and Nicolae Rotaru, who had started in the first leg at the Centenary Stadium, were left out in favour of Mihai Lupan and Maxim Cojocaru. The duo had come off the bench after the hour mark in the previous encounter and had added much-needed dynamism and athleticism, although they failed to score.

Petrocub came close to levelling the aggregate score early in the match.

In the fifth minute, Victor Bogaciuc struck the crossbar with a long-range effort, sparking the first wave of pressure. Soon after, Ion Bors tried his luck with a curling effort that sailed just over the bar.

Birkirkara had a golden opportunity to respond when Alexander Satariano found himself unmarked in front of goal, but he miskicked his volley, failing to trouble the Petrocub goalkeeper.

On 15 minutes, Jessie Djou also came close with a shot that went wide of Martinez’s goal.

The Moldovan side continued to threaten with a series of corners and crosses into the box during the opening 20 minutes, though they initially struggled to capitalise on their dominance.

That changed midway through the first half, when Lupan broke the deadlock.

Turning swiftly past his marker, the Petrocub forward unleashed a stunning shot into the top corner, leaving Birkirkara goalkeeper Martinez with no chance.

Despite the setback, both teams emerged for the second half unchanged.

However, Petrocub quickly doubled their lead through another Lupan goal, who slotted into an empty net after a well-engineered move by his side.

In response, De Angelis made an immediate change, replacing Neil Micallef with Macula and shifting to a four-man backline to gain more control in midfield and push higher up the pitch.

Birkirkara attempted to claw their way back into the match.

Makoma tried his luck with a long-range effort, but it failed to trouble the Petrocub shot-stopper. On 68 minutes, Satariano delivered a precise cross towards Macula, whose header was brilliantly saved by the Petrocub goalkeeper.

Just moments later, Satariano initiated a promising solo run before laying the ball off to Sasere, but the Nigerian’s low shot was diverted into a corner.

Petrocub missed a chance to seal the tie in the 75th minute when substitute Sergiu Platic fired wide from inside the box.

However, they didn’t have to wait long to find the decisive third. Just a minute later, Nicolae Rotaru, brought on in the second half, rifled in a long-range strike.

In the dying minutes, De Angelis handed a debut to new signing Jan Busuttil, who came on for his first appearance since joining Birkirkara in the summer transfer window.
