De La Salle College shall be participating in this year’s World Schools Team Chess Championships being held in Washington DC, USA.
De La Salle participated with three teams in the popular Chess Interschools Qualifiers held last April, in which 50 teams and over 160 students participated. Two of their teams ended in the top six places and thus qualified for the Finals
The Finals were held as part of the inaugural Malta School Games organised by the Ministry for Education, Research & Innovation in collaboration with SportMalta, the Maltese Olympic Committee (MOC) and the Malta Schools Sports Federations (MSSF).
The De La Salle team won the competition with a perfect score and earned the right to represent Malta in the World School event.
The team participating in the World Schools Team Chess Championships is formed by Gabriel Gauci, Gabriel Grech, Benjamin Calleja Falzon, Matthew Callus and Luke Micallef Trigona.
They shall be accompanied by captain and coach Duncan Vella from the Malta Chess Federation.
The tournament shall consist of eight rounds in a rapid format of 45 minutes (+10 sec increment) for each player. 4 players will play in any one round with alternative colours.
The students are training hard for the event, and for most of them, it will be their first experience participating outside of Malta.
