Hulk Hogan, the American sports and entertainment superstar who transformed professional wrestling into a global spectacle, has died at the age of 71, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) announced on Thursday.
“WWE is saddened to learn WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan has passed away. One of pop culture’s most recognizable figures, Hogan helped WWE achieve global recognition in the 1980s,” the company said in a statement.
Police in Clearwater, Florida, reported that emergency responders were called to Hogan’s residence on Thursday morning for a cardiac arrest. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
With his signature blond hair, bronze tan, and charismatic bravado, Hogan became the face of professional wrestling during the 1980s boom, helping elevate the sport from a niche spectacle to a billion-dollar, family-friendly industry.
A defining moment of his career, and of wrestling history, came at WrestleMania III in 1987, when Hogan famously body-slammed the 7-foot-4, 520-pound André the Giant before a packed Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan, cementing his status as a cultural icon.
