Swieqi United will rewrite the club’s history books on Wednesday as they step onto the European stage for the very first time in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
The Malta champions, who won their first-ever domestic league title last April, are in Slovakia to compete in the first qualifying round of UEFA’s prestigious club competition.
They open their commitments against Agarista SS Anenii Noi, of Moldova, in the semi-final of a four-team mini-tournament.
The winner of this match will move on to face either Slovakia’s Spartak Myjava or Buducnost of Montenegro, in Saturday’s final.
The team that finishes top of the group will progress to the second round, where Swieqi could face Slovenian champions ZNK Mura.
For Swieqi United, this is more than just a football match.
It’s a chance to represent Malta at the highest level of women’s club football. It is also a proud moment for their coach, Dorianne Theuma, who is leading the team in Europe for the first time.
“It’s a huge honour to lead Swieqi United in our first-ever Champions League campaign,” Theuma said.
“This is a proud milestone for me, the club, and especially the players. It reflects all the progress and dedication behind the scenes. I’m thrilled to share this journey with such a deserving team.”
While Swieqi United are new to the competition, Agarista have already participated in this competition, albeit with negative results.
The Moldovan side has dominated their domestic league, winning the title for seven years in a row, but they have yet to record a win in UEFA competitions.
Theuma believes the draw offers a fair challenge for her side, but she is under no illusion that any match at this level will be easy.
“We’re quite satisfied with the draw, but we know every game at this level is a challenge,” she said.
“Bigger pitches and different playing surfaces will test us. But we’re staying focused and respectful of every opponent. We’ve earned our spot here, and we’ll give it our all.”
Swieqi’s preparation for this tournament started early in the summer.
The Champions League qualifiers begin ahead of the domestic season in Malta, so it means less time to rest and a busy schedule for the players.
“The players came back from the short break fully locked in,” Theuma explained.
“It’s been a tight schedule with the Champions League starting early, but the effort has been incredible. While we didn’t get many friendlies due to local teams starting late, each training session has been intense and meaningful. The unity and commitment in this group are top-notch.”
For Theuma, this is not her first time in the Champions League, since she played in the competition multiple times during her playing career.
But this is her debut as a coach in Europe, and she knows well what it takes to compete at this level.
“There’s always a deep sense of pride when representing Maltese football, but we don’t see it as pressure,” she said.
“We’ve earned our place through hard work and determination. Our mindset doesn’t change based on the stage. We stay focused on improving, staying true to our values, and being the best version of ourselves every single day.”
Swieqi’s Champions League campaign is about more than just results.
Theuma hopes that this experience will help her players develop and also inspire more support and investment in women’s football in Malta.
“With such a young and driven squad, I hope this experience helps our players grow, gain valuable insight, and understand what it takes at the top level,” she said.
“More than that, I hope it inspires increased belief and investment in women’s football back in Malta. If we can raise the bar, even just a little, and keep pushing forward year after year – that’s a legacy I’d be proud to be part of.”
