Ħamrun Spartans goalkeeper Henry Bonello and defender Rafael Compri apologised for their behaviour after they clashed at the end of Tuesday’s Europa League clash at the Tony Bezzina Stadium.
Bonello and Compri were both charged with misconduct by the club after they were involved in an altercation after the final whistle of the match, which saw the Israeli side secure a dramatic 2-1 win.
The veteran goalkeeper was incensed by his team-mate’s error that led to Maccabi’s injury-time goal by substitute Elad Madmon.
The two players are due to appear in front of the club’s Governance and Ethics Board on Thursday night and are likely to face sanctions by the club for their behaviour.
But in the run-up to the hearing, both Bonello and Compri issued an apology.
Bonello, the Spartans’ captain, admitted that his behaviour was unacceptable and that he should have handled the situation with greater maturity and respect.
“As an international and experienced player, I am fully aware that I must – and can – do better,” Bonello wrote.
“I recognise my actions are not in line with the club’s commitment to setting high standards in management and professional conduct, both on and off the pitch. I am aware of the effort and dedication the club invests in promoting excellence in attitude and behaviour across all levels.
“I am truly sorry for the reputational damage I have caused.”
Bonello said that he was proud to be a Ħamrun Spartans player and captain of the club, and “I would like to publicly affirm my full commitment to doing my part in helping the club meet and exceed these expectations.
“I promise to do whatever it takes to regain the trust of the club and the respect of my team-mates.”
On his part Brazilian defender Compri also issued an apology for his actions.
“I am writing to sincerely apologise for the recent argument and physical altercation involving my team-mate and friend Henry Bonello,” Compri wrote.
“My behaviour was inappropriate and I deeply regret allowing my emotions to result in a public incident.
“My experience with Ħamrun has been overwhelmingly positive, and I am committed to ensuring that this unfortunate moment does not tarnish the strong relationship I have built with my team-mates, including Henry.
“The incident is behind me, and I am fully focused on continuing to contribute positively to the team, as I did in yesterday’s excellent performance. I value the camaraderie and unity within our squad, and I am determined to uphold those values moving forward.”
