Ħamrun Spartans captain Henry Bonello and defender Rafael Compri are set to face a hearing in front of the club’s disciplinary committee following his clash with team-mate Rafael Compri at the end of the UEFA Europa League clash against Maccabi Tel Aviv, of Israel, on Tuesday.
Bonello was charged with misconduct after he clashed with Brazilian defender Compri after the final whistle of the match, which saw the Israeli side secure a dramatic 2-1 win.
The veteran goalkeeper was incensed by his team-mate’s error that led to Maccabi’s injury-time goal by substitute Elad Madmon.
In a statement, club CEO Marcel Bonnici, congratulated the Spartans for their excellent performance against Maccabi Tel Aviv.
“We would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to our Players and Technical Staff for their outstanding performance yesterday against Maccabi Tel Aviv at the Tony Bezzina Stadium,” Bonnici wrote.
“Reaching the Third Qualifying Round of the UEFA Europa League is a historic milestone – one that no other Maltese club has ever achieved – and we are immensely proud of this accomplishment..
“Despite the technical and financial strength of our opponents, it is widely acknowledged that our team delivered a performance that deserved more.”
Bonnici said that the incident between Bonello and Compri marred the display.
The Ħamrun Spartans CEO added that the issue will be discussed in front of the club’s Governance and Ethics Body to deal with the matter.
“Regrettably, this remarkable performance was overshadowed by an incident involving our captain, Henry Bonello, and player Rafael Compri at the end of the match.
“As a club, we categorically condemn such behaviour. It does not reflect our values, the standards we uphold, the level we want to arrive and the image we publicly promote.
“To address this matter with the seriousness it warrants, we are convening our Governance and Ethics Board immediately.
“Disciplinary and corrective action will be taken to ensure accountability and uphold the integrity of our club.”
The Times of Malta understands the Governance and Ethics Board will convene to discuss the matter this evening.
