Referee Trustin Farrugia Cann announces bid for MFA vice-presidency

Trustin Farrugia Cann announced that he is temporarily suspending his role as international referee to launch a bid for the vacant spot of MFA vice-president.

The Malta FA is set to hold an election to fill the vacant role during the upcoming Ordinary General Assembly.

The vacant position was previously occupied by Dr Maria Azzopardi, who officially resigned from the position earlier this month.

Dr Azzopardi was elected as vice-president in March 2024, becoming the first female to occupy the role. However, in December 2024, she was nominated and appointed General Secretary of the Malta FA.

As a result, an election will be held during the next Ordinary General Assembly on October 16.

In a statement on his Facebook page, Farrugia Cann announced that he is set to submit his name for the upcoming election as he believes that he can serve Maltese football in a new way.

“Today, on the feast of The Assumption of Our Lady, I am announcing my candidacy for the post of Vice President of the Malta Football Association, with the election taking place on 16 October,” Farrugia Cann said.

“After 24 years in refereeing – in the Premier League since 2010 with over 200 matches officiated, and 10 years proudly representing Malta as a FIFA referee – I will be suspending myself from refereeing until the election.

“This means, for the first time in 24 years, I will not be starting a football season on the field of play.

“I believe I have much to offer to the future of Maltese football, and I look forward to the journey ahead and to continuing to serve the game in a new way.”

The Malta FA announced earlier this week that nominations for the filling of the posts of officers of the association may be made by any association member at least 19 days before the date scheduled for the General Assembly, provided that candidates fulfil the relevant eligibility criteria.
