Marsaxlokk kicked off their YoHealth Malta Premier League campaign in style with a convincing 3-1 victory over Mosta, underlining their ambitions to challenge for European qualification this season.
The Southseasiders, led by Italian coach Enzo Potenza, made significant investments in experience during the summer transfer window.
Their new-look squad wasted little time in making an impression, with Brazilian forward Marcel Barros stealing the spotlight thanks to a decisive brace.
Mosta, who will be aiming to replicate last season’s achievement of back-to-back Top Six finishes, showed spirit but ultimately left Ta’ Qali empty-handed in their opening outing.
Both teams paraded several debutants. For Marsaxlokk, goalkeeper Christoffer Mafoumbi, defenders Enrico Pepe and Oualid El Hasni, midfielder Joseph Minala, and striker Ayom Majok all started. Mosta, still under the guidance of Joseph Grech, introduced goalkeeper Anse Demba, along with Joao Victor, Quelmar Herrera, and Caio Sena.
It was Mosta who had the first sight of goal through captain Zachary Brincat, who recently returned from a loan spell at Tarxien Rainbows. His early shot drifted wide, before Marsaxlokk responded immediately when Majok lobbed Demba, only to be denied by the crossbar.
Marsaxlokk took the lead in the 16th minute. El Hasni delivered a cross into the area where Barros pounced, beating the onrushing Demba and his effort finishing into the empty net.
Mosta immediately hit back.
From a corner by Giancarlo Goncalves, Brincat reacted quickest in the box to guide the ball past Mafoumbi and restore parity.
Potenza’s side pressed for another breakthrough, with Majok spearheading counter-attacks and captain Nikolai Muscat firing narrowly wide.
Leandro Aguirre also saw one of his trademark free-kicks sail just over the bar before half-time.
After the interval, Mosta introduced Aboubacar Diarra to strengthen their defensive shape. However, within minutes, Marsaxlokk reclaimed the advantage.
Once again, it was Barros, rising highest to head home from close range and secure his second of the evening.
Grech’s men pushed to equalise, with Prince Emmanuel trying his luck with a speculative volley that missed the target.
But Marsaxlokk’s attacking cohesion proved decisive.
In the 68th minute, Jose Arias threaded a clever pass into Majok, who unselfishly set up Dodo to finish into an unguarded net and put the result beyond doubt.
Mosta, despite introducing fresh attacking legs such as Daniel GTA, could not find a way back. Prince tested Mafoumbi again from distance, while Daniel saw his close-range effort blocked. At the other end, Dodo nearly added a fourth but dragged his shot just wide.
In stoppage time, Mosta ended with a man down after Goncalves was shown a straight red for a negligent tackle.
