Ħamrun Spartans have filed a request with UEFA to move their Conference League Play-Off clash against Latvian side RFS from the National Stadium to the Centenary Stadium.

The Play Off round first-leg tie is scheduled to be held on Thursday at 7pm, and the Spartans are now hopeful that the European governing body will accept their request to move the match to the Centenary Stadium.

The Spartans have made this request due to the poor conditions of the playing surface of the National Stadium.

There were already major concerns about the condition of the pitch at the National Stadium before last weekend, as it was clear that the venue was not in a condition to host football matches.

Last weekend, four matches of the YoHealth Malta Premier League were held at the National Stadium, and the condition of the pitch worsened considerably, forcing top officials from Ħamrun Spartans to file their request to UEFA.

The Spartans are hopeful their request is accepted by UEFA as they bid to become the first Maltese side to reach the League Phase of a UEFA club competition, and they will fulfil their objective if they manage to overcome the Latvian side.

This is the second time that Ħamrun Spartans were forced to switch a European tie from the National Stadium.

The Reds were already due to host the home leg of the UEFA Europa League clash against Maccabi Tel Aviv at the National Stadium earlier this month, but were forced to switch the first leg to the Tony Bezzina Stadium as the pitch of the National Stadium was not ready to host matches.
