The 2025-26 YoHealth Malta Premier League kicked off over the weekend with a slate of intriguing opening fixtures.
Defending champions Ħamrun Spartans began their bid for a fourth straight title with a surprising 1-1 draw against newly-promoted Tarxien Rainbows. Fellow newcomers Valletta also impressed, holding last season’s title challengers Birkirkara to a goalless draw on their return to the top flight. Meanwhile, potential contenders Floriana and Sliema Wanderers both opened with victories.
SportsDesk looks at Matchday 1’s main talking points:
Ħamrun focused on Europe
The Spartans were widely expected to open their title defence with a win, but were instead held to a 1-1 draw by Tarxien Rainbows, and were lucky not to suffer defeat as Tarxien struck the crossbar late on.
Coach Giacomo Modica rotated heavily ahead of Thursday’s UEFA Conference League play-off tie against RFS. Celio started in goal, while Nikolai Micallef, Sven Xerri, Daniel Letherby, Redon Mihana, Mouad El Fanis and Merlin Hadzi all featured despite limited European minutes so far.
There was further concern as key midfielder Jovan Cadjenovic limped off injured, leaving the club anxiously awaiting updates on his condition. Regulars Joseph Mbong, Ryan Camenzuli and Matias Garcia were introduced off the bench, while former Roma player Ante Coric notched his first assist in Malta, setting up Vincenzo Polito for the equaliser.
Floriana impress despite Naxxar scare
Floriana got their campaign off to a winning start with a 3-1 victory over Naxxar Lions, though the scoreline could have been very different. After racing into a two-goal lead, the Greens looked complacent and superficial in possession, almost letting their opponents back into the game.
Coach Daniel Portela opted for a tactical tweak, handing a start to Portuguese winger Francisco Teixeira in place of regular Mattia Veselji. In a 4-3-3 setup, creative midfielder Francesco Varela often dropped into the left-back role to initiate build-up, freeing left-back Gonzalo Gamarra to push forward. This allowed inside midfielder Jake Grech to slot into Varela’s space and create 1v1 situations for striker Moustapha Jah.
Jah once again showcased the qualities he had already displayed in Europe – pace, strength, hold-up play – and was rewarded with a goal.
National Stadium pitch in horrible conditions
A major disappointment in the opening day of the championship was the poor state of the National Stadium pitch.
It was clear that the players who had to play their team’s fixture at the National Stadium found the going tough to try and play some decent football on a poor surface as teams struggled to produce any form of slick passing football.
The National Stadium pitch condition worsened as the weekend continued, with TV pictures clearly showing the major damage the pitch suffered after four matches were played between Saturday and Sunday.
It’s disappointing to see the National Stadium in such a state as it seems that work carried out by the Malta FA to have the pitch ready for the start of the season completely failed to reap the desired dividends.
The local governing body had almost two months to get the pitch ready in time for the first Match Day of the season as the last match to be played on the venue was Malta’s World Cup qualifier against Lithuania on June 7.
There are more repercussions to come to the situation as it has now been confirmed that UEFA has turned down Ħamrun Spartans’ request to switch their UEFA Conference League Play Off Round home leg against RFS from the National Stadium to the Centenary Stadium.
So, one of Malta’s most important fixtures in European club football is set to be staged at a venue that leaves much to be desired, and it’s certainly not on for a country that is striving to reach a higher level of competitiveness on the international stage.
