Malta will take on San Marino in a friendly match on Tuesday, with head coach Emilio De Leo and forward Irvin Cardona upbeat on the national team’s chances of extending their positive form of late.
The match will be played at the National Stadium, in Ta’ Qali (kick-off: 7pm).
Both struck a balance of realism, optimism, and professionalism as they reflected on recent performances and looked ahead to the challenge.
De Leo underlined the importance of consistency in Malta’s development: “We must learn from each game and focus on building continuity.”
The coach reflected on last week’s 1-1 draw against Lithuania, where Malta came close to victory but narrowly fell short in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifications.
He stressed that progress should not be measured solely through results, but also through resilience and lessons learned.
Acknowledging the squad’s challenges, particularly injuries and absences even before the Lithuania match, De Leo praised those who stepped up, including debutant Cardona, Brandon Paiber, Myles Beerman, and Jake Grech.
He commended how they “rose up to the occasion and did their best,” reinforcing the depth and value of every player.
Cardona, who plays for French side Saint-Étienne, reflected positively on making his debut for Malta: “It was a pleasant game. I’ve adapted well and hope this is just one of many.”
De Leo also highlighted the collective responsibility within the squad: “I take responsibility, but we all should, both the experienced and the younger players. We should not throw in the towel and must keep hoping.”
Looking ahead to the San Marino clash, De Leo stressed that both mental and tactical focus will be crucial. He warned against underestimating the importance of a friendly, reminding that all matches are important.
