The YoHealth Malta Premier League resumes this weekend with Matchday 3 after the September international break, which brought a small but significant boost to the Malta national team, collecting its second point in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

This Matchday was originally scheduled for earlier in the season but had to be pushed back due to Ħamrun Spartans’ extended run in the UEFA Conference League qualifiers.

The league now returns in full swing, and supporters can look forward to an intriguing set of fixtures that promise early twists in the domestic race.

The undoubted highlight comes on Saturday evening with the clash between Birkirkara and Hibernians, two heavyweights aiming to contend for silverware.

For Birkirkara, this will be the first match without Italian coach Stefano De Angelis, who parted ways with the club after what the club deemed as a disappointing start. The Stripes opened the season with back-to-back goalless draws against Valletta and Gżira United, results that frustrated both board and supporters considering the significant summer investment made in the squad.

Birkirkara’s recruitment drive was particularly focused on bolstering their attack. Nigerian forward Franklin Sasere, formerly of Floriana, and Brazilian attacker Lucas Macula, previously at Gżira United, were brought in to add firepower. They were joined by Geoffrey Acheampong, the ex-Sliema Wanderers midfielder who scored the club’s only competitive goal this season – a decisive strike in the 1-0 UEFA Conference League win over Moldova’s Petrocub.

However, those goals have yet to materialise in the league, leaving the Stripes winless and with plenty of questions about their attacking efficiency.

Coach Alessandro Caridi, previous De Angelis’ assistant and who confirmed he will lead the side for this match, has stressed the importance of unity and focus during this transitional period.

“The squad has quality and depth, but we must translate our training performances into matches for the full 90 minutes,” he explained.

Caridi underlined the need for sharper finishing. “It is not only about creating chances but about converting them. Against Hibernians, this will be crucial.”

With the exception of Kemar Reid and Nathan Cross, both away with Malta senior and U21 squads respectively, he had nearly a full group at his disposal, benefitting from what he described as “a high-intensity preparation period” during the break.

One figure who could prove vital in unlocking Birkirkara’s attack is Jan Busuttil, the Maltese forward renowned for his creativity and dribbling flair.

“With a new coach it is still early days, but the priority is to secure full points and start climbing the table,” Busuttil said.

He admitted the Stripes have “not been good enough” so far, but stressed the importance of taking the season step by step.

Busuttil, who accepted the club’s decision to move on from De Angelis, has set the immediate target as securing a first league victory, even if it comes against a difficult opponent.

“Hibernians are always well-organised and dangerous, but we must believe in ourselves.”

Their opponents, Hibernians, have taken four points from their opening two matches, with a victory over Gżira United followed by a draw against newly promoted Żabbar St. Patrick.

Despite being unbeaten, coach Branko Nisevic has been candid about the issues his team must fix, especially defensively.

The Paolites have already conceded five goals in two outings, something he attributes to lapses in concentration at set pieces and a lack of compactness.

“Our focus must be on greater organisation, particularly in defensive transitions,” Nisevic noted.

He also warned that Birkirkara, despite their current struggles, remain a side of quality that could find renewed motivation after the coaching change.

Hibernians’ preparations have also been hampered by injuries. Goalkeeper Laurentiu Branescu faces months on the sidelines after being injured in the opening game, while Hugo Sacco is edging closer to a return.

Alex Bruno has departed the club altogether, joining Birżebbuġa St. Peters in the BOV Challenge League.

Meanwhile, key forward Jurgen Degabriele is due for surgery and will be out until November.

Adding to his frustration, Nisevic expressed disappointment at the lack of Hibernians call-ups to the national squad.

One of the Paolites’ key performers so far has been Dexter Xuereb, whose adaptability has been key.

“I’m pleased at being trusted in different roles, including part of a back three,” Xuereb said.

He underlined his willingness to contribute wherever required, while acknowledging the tough test Birkirkara will pose.

Ħamrun eye win

Beyond the Birkirkara vs Hibernians clash, Matchday 3 offers several other compelling fixtures.

Ħamrun Spartans, champions and widely tipped to retain their crown, are still chasing their first win of the season after two draws. They meet Mosta, fresh from upsetting Sliema Wanderers, and will be desperate to shift gears.

Floriana, the only side with maximum points after two matches, host Gżira United, who sit on just one point and need to steady the ship quickly.

Valletta, on two points, face an in-form Marsaxlokk, who have enjoyed a perfect start. This fixture will be a true test of the Citizens’ ambitions under their revamped project.

Saturday’s late kick-offs see Żabbar St. Patrick (1 point) meet winless Naxxar Lions, while Sliema Wanderers (3 points) take on Tarxien Rainbows (1 point).
