Floriana and Gżira United produced an entertaining contest at the Tony Bezzina Stadium sharing the spoils in a 1-1 draw that kept both sides’ campaigns on contrasting paths.
The Greens preserved their unbeaten start to the season and moved top of the Premier League table ahead of their derby clash with Valletta, while Gżira, despite showing spirit, remain winless after facing three title contenders in succession — Hibernians, Birkirkara and Floriana.
Gżira coach Clive Mizzi sprang a surprise by handing debuts to two 19-year-olds, goalkeeper Karl Sargent and Deacon Abela. His Portuguese counterpart Daniel da Silva Portela tweaked his system, deploying Federico Varela in a central role behind Rui Manuel Areias, with Jake Grech pushed wide on the right.
The Maroons began on the front foot, André da Costa Penha and Maxuell Maia linking well in the opening exchanges. Maia, formerly of Melita, fired narrowly wide before breaking the deadlock after 11 minutes. Gzira were awared a free-kick on the left flank in perfect Clayton Failla, most expected Failla’s trademark effort, but Maia stepped up instead, sending a low shot goalwards that deflected off Wallace Bonilha and beat Guilherme Cioletti.
Floriana looked rattled but replied swiftly. Five minutes later, Varela carved open the Gżira defence with a superb through-ball. Areias read the pass perfectly, timed his run to precision, and slotted coolly past Sargent for the equaliser.
The Greens grew stronger, Grech testing Sargent from a set-piece before Owen Spiteri’s header was blocked by the young goalkeeper. Soon after, Varela and Areias combined again, though the Portuguese striker’s header went straight at the debutant custodian.
At half-time, Mizzi introduced Andrew Borg in place of Abela to stabilise his defence, while Portela threw on Francisco Teixeira to maintain his side’s tempo. Yet, as the second half unfolded, Gżira dug deep. Mizzi was forced to bolster his rearguard by switching to a five-man defence, withdrawing Penha da Costa and Bonilha for Gabriel Bohrer and Santiago Perlaza. The tactical shift nearly paid off on the hour when Fabricio Silva Virgens surged down the flank and forced Cioletti into a double save on the line.
The closing stages brought drama at both ends. Floriana substitute Teixeira to replicate Varela’s earlier magic as another clever pass, put substitute Mustapha Jah through but his angled effort was denied by Sargent. Deep in stoppage time, Virgens broke free for Gżira, only to fire straight at Cioletti. Brooklyn Borg pounced on the rebound but, under contact, tumbled in the box. Referee Ishmael Barbara waved play on and booked the youngster for simulation, leaving the Maroons incensed.
In the end, both sides had their chances to win it, but a draw was a fair reflection of an evenly balanced encounter. Floriana will view it as another step towards consistency at the summit, while Gżira — still without a victory — can take heart from a battling performance against yet another heavyweight opponent.
