The Assikura Women’s League resumed after a one-week break that allowed space for the Assikura Women’s Super Cup, which was clinched by Swieqi United against Mġarr United.
This week, both sides were in action again, with Swieqi edging Birkirkara 1-0 in the headline clash, while Mġarr extended their perfect record to three wins out of three.
Hibernians also maintained their flawless start, sweeping aside Valletta.
At the Centenary Stadium, Swieqi’s Bulgarian international Aleksandra Yaneva struck after just 13 minutes, slotting past Janice Xuereb to secure victory.
Birkirkara had a golden opportunity to equalise, but new signing Momo Ueda failed to convert a penalty.

Ueda, who recently joined the Stripes alongside fellow Japan-born recruit Haruhi Sekura, was handed her debut, while midfielder Leanne Micallef, another summer signing, also featured from the start.
Before kick-off, Swieqi veteran Emma Xuereb was honoured with a commemorative memento for reaching 100 appearances across all competitions.

Over in Mġarr, Argentine forward Maria Hernandez stole the show with a hat-trick in a 4-0 triumph over San Ġwann.

Valeria Villegas added the other goal as coach Ryan Vella opted to pair Hernandez with Josline N’Guessan for the first time.
Meanwhile, Hibernians breezed past Valletta thanks to a hat-trick from youngster Suzanne Farrugia Sacco, formerly of the Citizens.

Additional goals came from Sarah Vella Barberi, Alanah Ghio, Ileana Farrugia and captain Nicole Sciberras.

Early-season tests for league leaders
Matchday 4 of the Assikura Women’s League promises exciting football, two headline matches that will offer more twists this early in the new 2025/2026 campaign.
Swieqi, taking on Hibernians, head into this fixture on the back of two consecutive victories, including last weekend’s narrow 1-0 win over Birkirkara.
Having also lifted the Assikura Women’s Super Cup earlier this month, the Owls are in buoyant spirits as their new signings continue to find their rhythm.
Three points behind Hibernians, this showdown offers Swieqi a chance to immediately draw level with one of their direct rivals.
Hibernians, on their part, are flying high after three straight wins, including a gritty 2-1 triumph over Birkirkara.
For the Paolites, this encounter is an early-season benchmark to measure themselves against last year’s champions.
Adding extra intrigue, this will be the first senior-level coaching duel between Dorianne Theuma and Martina Borg, two former teammates at both Hibernians and the national team.
Elsewhere, Mġarr United face Birkirkara in another headline fixture.
The Greens are brimming with confidence, having stunned Swieqi on opening day and winning all three matches so far.
With Maria Hernandez and Valeria Villegas among the league’s joint-top scorers (three goals each), Mġarr will be keen to underline their title credentials with another big performance.
Birkirkara, meanwhile, have endured a rocky start under Billy Mock, registering two defeats and just one win.
The Stripes are in a transition phase, integrating several young players, but will be eager to avoid falling nine points behind the league leaders after just four matchdays.
In the final fixture, San Ġwann and Valletta meet in what has been the traditional Bottom Four clash in recent seasons.
Both sides are still searching for their first points and will see this as a vital opportunity to get off the mark.
