Spurs boss Frank will ignore league table until April

Tottenham manager Thomas Frank said he will ignore the Premier League table until April despite his side’s strong start to the season.

Frank’s men have won three of their first four league games under the Dane and beat Villarreal in their Champions League opener on Tuesday.

Third-placed Tottenham could go top with a victory at Brighton on Saturday, if leaders Liverpool lose the Merseyside derby against Everton earlier in the day.

Asked when he would start keeping an eye on the title race by checking the table, Frank told reporters on Friday: “April? Let’s put it that way.

“I think I looked at the table a couple of times after one of the last games and I thought, ‘ooh, is that team that high or that low?’ because I’m not looking at it.

“I’m trying really to focus on our ourselves and our performances and what we can do.”

Former Brentford boss Frank has hit the ground running since arriving in north London to replace the sacked Ange Postecoglou in the close-season.

But the 51-year-old cannot afford to be distracted by dreams of leading Tottenham to a first English title since 1961.

He is rebuilding a squad that won the Europa League under Postecoglou but finished 17th in the Premier League in a dismal campaign that ranked as their worst in the top-flight since 1976-77.

“It is so easy to get dragged into something you can’t control. I think for the fans, they should dream, they should hope and all that. That is what football is all about,” Frank said.

“I also dream and hope but I’m a little bit closer to the action, so I need to stay level-headed and focus on next training because it needs to be perfect like today.

“It was very good training, with the coaches, with the staff, top players. Everything ran very well and then I need to do what I can to make sure we win more.”
