Veteran forward becomes Malta’s all-time leading scorer

Senglea Athletic striker Timmy Thomas has become Malta’s all-time leading goal scorer after putting his name on the scoresheet in his team’s 3-0 win over Kalkara United in the first round of the Amateur Cup.

According to Maltese football statistician Lennard Kelder, Thomas fired home the opening goal of the game to secure his 336th goal in Maltese football, breaking the previous record held by Johnny Camilleri, who had netted 335 goals.

Ironically, Timmy Thomas has a scoring history with his former club Kalkara United, where he is the club’s all-time leading scorer with 74 goals.

It is interesting to note that Michael Mifsud, Malta’s all-time national team top scorer, is third on the list with 310 goals, while Stefan Sultana, the all-time leading scorer in the Premier League, is eighth with 266 goals.

According to the data collected by Kelder, Timmy Thomas’s scoring record is spread over 22 years, during which he netted 178 goals in the Maltese Second Division or the revamped National Amateur League One.

Thomas has also found the net 89 times in the Third Division or the National Amateur League Two, while he boasts 31 goals in the First Division.

Added to that, Thomas has scored 17 goals in the Division Two/Three Knock Out competition as well as 14 goals in the Amateur Cup.

He also boasts six goals in the FA Trophy and has also put his name on the scoring books in the newly-launched Jubilee Cup with one goal.

During his career, Thomas has won the top scorer award on multiple occasions and in different divisions.

Thomas, who scored his first goal back in October 2003 for his club Senglea Athletic in a Division One match against Lija Athletic, was the second division top scorer four times in 2011, 2014, 2015, and 2018.

He topped the scoring charts in Division Three twice in 2013 and 2017 when on the books of Senglea Athletic and Kalkara, respectively.

Last season, he was the National Amateur League Two top scorer and is the all-time top scorer in the Third-tier on 178 goals and in the fourth-tier on 89 goals.
