Former Mexico international Omar Bravo, the all-time top scorer for Mexican club Chivas de Guadalajara, was arrested on charges of child sexual abuse, prosecutors said Saturday.
Police arrested Bravo, 45, in a suburb of Guadalajara city, the capital of Jalisco state.
The Jalisco prosecutor’s office said it had evidence that Bravo “abused a teenage girl on several occasions in recent months” and suspects he had previously “committed similar acts.”
Bravo is charged with aggravated child sexual abuse and will appear before a court within hours, the state prosecutor’s office added in a statement.
The court had ordered his arrest after the victim filed a complaint, the statement added, with the investigation of the case continuing.
Bravo was born in the Mexican state of Sinaloa and made his football debut in 2001 with Chivas, the team with which he won the 2006 Apertura league tournament.
The following year, he won the scoring title with 11 goals.
He transferred to Spanish team Deportivo de La Coruna in 2008, where he only played for six months.
To date, he is the top scorer in Chivas’ history, with 132 goals in league tournaments and 160 across all competitions.
He also played in the 2006 World Cup in Germany, where he scored two goals against Iran in the Mexican team’s first match of the tournament.
Chivas de Guadalajara is the only soccer team in the country that does not have any foreign players.
