Depay to join team later after losing passport
Ronald Koeman has called up Juventus midfielder Teun Koopmeiners for the Dutch national team’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers as a replacement for injured Feyenoord player Quinten Timber.
Timber missed Feyenoord’s last two matches against Aston Villa (0-2) and FC Utrecht (3-2) due to a foot injury. Feyenoord coach Robin van Persie said today that Timber would miss the Dutch national team.
Koopmeiners was missing from the original 24-man squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Malta (October 9) and Finland (October 12). He was included in the previous international break, but didn’t get any playing time against Poland and Lithuania.
Meanwhile, Memphis Depay was supposed to fly from Brazil to the Netherlands on Sunday night, but couldn’t find his passport.
“Then it’s difficult to fly,” Koeman joked. Depay went to the airport without his passport, hoping for a solution, but it wasn’t found.
He is expected to board the plane on Monday evening and land in the Netherlands around 9:30, on Tuesday morning.
“The plan I had in mind for this week will ultimately change somewhat because of this,” said Koeman. “He won’t start, no.”
