Hibernians FC have terminated the contract of goalkeeper Justin Haber with immediate effect after he was found guilty of harassing a girl earlier on Thursday.

The veteran goalkeeper was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment, suspended for four years, as well as a €7,000 fine.

The news shocked the Maltese football fraternity, and it is understood that the Hibernians’ top administration met to discuss the issue and it was decided to terminate Haber’s contract with immediate effect.

“This is to confirm that the agreement between the club and player Justin Haber has been terminated,” Hibernians said in a short statement.

“No further comment will be made at this time.”

Haber had joined Hibernians at the start of the season when he agreed to return to the Paola club as a back-up for Romanian goalkeeper Laurentiu Branescu.

Earlier this year, Haber was handed a restraining order after a court found him guilty of threatening to behead his sister. Shortly after, he resigned as a Floriana councillor on behalf of the Labour Party.
