Match was earmarked as Borg’s testimonial after 14-year career with national team
Steve Borg will be unable to play for Malta for one last time on Sunday after suffering a recurrence of his hamstring injury during the national team’s final training session on Saturday.
The Valletta defender was hoping to pick up his 82nd cap for the national team in a friendly international against Bosnia and Herzegovina at the National Stadium.
But the Malta FA announced that the 37-year-old will be unable to feature on Sunday, in what was promised to be his testimonial match.
Despite the injury, Borg will still be given a proper send-off with a presentation ceremony scheduled before kick-off.
“What was meant to be Steve Borg’s final appearance for the Malta national team will now be marked by a presentation ceremony, as unfortunately, Steve sustained an injury during MD-1 training and will be unable to feature in tomorrow’s match against Bosnia & Herzegovina,” the Malta FA said in a statement.
“The Malta Football Association extends its heartfelt support to Steve and wishes him a speedy recovery. His contribution and dedication to the national team will still be honoured before the match.”
Meanwhile the MFA statement said that coach Emilio De Leo has decided to release Andrew Borg and Keyon Ewurum to join the Malta Under-21 squad ahead of their UEFA European Championship Group F match against Georgia, to be played on Tuesday, at the Centenary Stadium (kick-off at 7:00pm).”
