Gżira United moved clear of the relegation places when they eased past Tarxien Rainbows 3-1 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.
The Maroons were desperate for the three points as they looked to climb the standings and move closer to those teams who are battling for a Top Six spot, albeit their hopes look slim given that there are only two matches to go before the end of the opening phase.
Gżira all but wrapped up all three points inside the first 45 minutes when they raced into a two-goal lead.
Darren Abdilla’s men surged ahead on 29 minutes. Tarxien defender Rafael Tavares was shown a straight red card when he handled the ball on the goalline in a bid to keep out a shot from Andre Pena Da Costa.
From the resultant penalty, Gabriel Mentz made no mistake from the spot.
The Rainbows looked rattled and Gżira United went on to double their advantage on 38 minutes courtesy of Andre Pena Da Costa.
With two goals to the good and a man more on the pitch, the Maroons looked in control but Tarxien kept fighting and William Salomao pulled one back on 85 minutes.
But it was Gżira who had the final say as Andre struck again to seal the points that lifted them to eighth on nine points.
Tarxien remained third from bottom on five points.
