Marsaxlokk FC issued a statement to condemn the improper behaviour of the Hibernians players at the end of the YoHealth Malta Premier League clash at the Victor Tedesco Stadium on Saturday night.
Marsaxlokk came back from two goals down to hold Hibernians to a 2-2 draw, a result that saw the Southerners progress to the Top Six while relegating the Paolites to the Bottom Six.
Reports said that at the final whistle, Hibernians players were involved in a number of altercations with Marsaxlokk players who were celebrating their qualification.
In a statement, Marsaxlokk FC expressed their disappointment at the behaviour of the Hibernians players which they described as ‘shameful and violent acts.
“The shameful and violent acts of Hibernians FC players at the end of today’s game at Victor Tedesco Stadium are categorically condemned by Marsaxlokk FC,” the club said in a statement.
“The obvious contempt and physical aggressiveness displayed were totally out of place in professional football and directly attacked the game’s integrity.
“This was a risky and humiliating performance that had no place in our sport; it was not passion.”
Marsaxlokk FC appealed to the authorities that severe disciplinary action should be taken against those responsible to ensure that such behaviour doesn’t happen again.
“To preserve Maltese football’s reputation and make sure that this behavior doesn’t happen again, we demand that the appropriate authorities take severe disciplinary action,” the statement said.
“We also applaud the refereeing staff for their composure and professionalism throughout the incident.”
