Hibernians eye revenge against Marsaxlokk in Jubilee Cup Last 16

Just a few days after their explosive Premier League clash, Hibernians and Marsaxlokk will cross swords again at the Centenary Stadium on Wednesday, with a place in the quarter-finals of the Jubilee Cup at stake (kick-off 6pm).

Last Saturday, Marsaxlokk came from two goals down to clinch a 2-2 draw against Hibernians to clinch a place in the Top Six and condemn the Paolites to the Bottom Six.

The Paolites have the opportunity to take some revenge on the southerners as they look to reach the quarter-finals of the one-off competition.

Missing out on the Top Six was a major blow for the Paolites, and they will do everything they can to try and revive their season with a strong run in the cup competition.

Coach Branko Nisevic will expect a strong response from his players to show that they are much better than the side that failed to deliver in recent weeks.

On the other hand, Marsaxlokk are brimming with confidence after securing back-to-back wins in the league that pulled them into the Top Six.

Coach Enzo Potenza will expect his players to show the same fighting spirit shown on Saturday as they look to move closer to the final stages of the Jubilee Cup.

Stripes response

The second match of the day at the Centenary Stadium is also expected to provide fireworks as Sliema Wanderers will take on Birkirkara.

These two teams come into the match in contrasting form as while the Wanderers seem to be starting to show their true strength with qualification to the Top Six, Birkirkara have been struggling for results against the top teams.

Sliema coach Paul Zammit was delighted with the fighting qualities shown by his team in last Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Floriana and hopes they can continue to raise the bar in terms of performance as they look to put their hands on this prestigious trophy.

For Birkirkara, the match against Sliema is the perfect opportunity to bounce back from Saturday’s disappointing 2-0 defeat to Ħamrun Spartans.

Coach Gianluca Festa made it clear that he expects much more from his players and today’s clash against Sliema is the perfect opportunity to show that they can be among the protagonists for the main honours this season.

On Thursday, another two Premier League clashes will be on schedule at the Centenary Stadium as Żabbar St Patrick, buoyed by their win over Valletta, will take on Naxxar Lions, while in the late fixture, Tarxien Rainbows face in-form Gżira United.

Valletta will be in action on Friday when they are expected to reach the quarter-finals when they take on Challenge League side Mġarr United.

The Jubilee Cup Last 16 will come to an end on Sunday with a highly-awaited clash as champions Ħamrun Spartans will face Floriana at the Tony Bezzina Stadium.
