The Marsa Sports Club (MSC) recently hosted a pivotal meeting focused on shaping the future of cricket development within the Marsa community and across Malta.
The gathering brought together civic leaders, sponsors, and club representatives to discuss how to strengthen youth engagement, broaden local participation, and attract more international cricket tourism to the island.
Present at the meeting were Marsa Mayor Luke Farrugia, Pierre Azzopardi (Director, Sundreams Travel), and Fabrizio Ferruggia (Director, Ferruggia Fleet), alongside Marsa Sports Club officials Godwin Borg (Club Chairman), Dermot Galea (Club Secretary), David Millard (Cricket Section Chairman), and Lee Tuck (Cricket Section Secretary).
At the heart of this initiative is Lee Tuck, who has been the key driving force behind the renewed focus on youth cricket and community engagement in Marsa.
Tuck has spearheaded discussions on creating a long-term development framework that will give local children greater access to cricket and build on the success of existing programmes such as the Marsa Sports Club Summer Camp.
Each year, the MSC Summer Camp welcomes around 260 children, giving them the opportunity to experience various sports, including cricket. However, as Tuck pointed out, there is currently no follow-up programme to sustain that engagement beyond the summer period – a gap the new initiative aims to fill.
“We have hundreds of children getting their first taste of cricket through our summer camp,” said Tuck.
“But once the camp ends, most don’t have a clear path to continue playing. Our goal is to change that – to give every child who enjoys cricket a reason and an opportunity to stay involved year-round.”
The new plans include expanding junior coaching programmes, launching school outreach initiatives in Marsa, and organising community cricket days to make the sport more accessible to local families. Tuck emphasised that cricket offers benefits for all children — not just those with athletic ability — helping develop concentration, teamwork, resilience, and confidence both on and off the field.
Mayor Luke Farrugia praised the initiative, highlighting its potential to make a lasting social impact:
“Cricket in Marsa has a rich history, and thanks to the commitment of people like Mr. Tuck and the Marsa Sports Club, we can ensure it has an even brighter future. By investing in youth sport, we’re investing in stronger, healthier communities,” he said.
Sponsors Sundreams Travel and Ferruggia Fleet also reiterated their dedication to supporting the club’s vision.
“Through Sundreams Travel, we’re committed to bringing more touring teams — both senior and junior — to Malta,” said Pierre Azzopardi. “These visits not only give local players valuable experience but also showcase Malta as a premier destination for sports tourism.”
Ferruggia, whose Marsa-based company has long supported local sporting initiatives, added:
“We’re proud to back efforts that open doors for young people. Cricket teaches teamwork, discipline, and respect — qualities that serve children well in every part of life.”
With collaborative support from local government, sponsors, and the Marsa Sports Club, Tuck’s vision for sustainable cricket development aims to ensure that Marsa continues to serve as the home of Maltese cricket – inspiring future generations while positioning Malta as an emerging international destination for the sport.
Further announcements regarding the club’s follow-up youth programmes and community cricket initiatives are expected in the coming months.
