The Aquatic Sports Association announced that Rita Azzopardi has been appointed as Technical Delegate at the Women’s European Waterpolo Championship, while ASA president will be the vice-chairman of the Technical Commission in the men’s Euros.
The appointment of Azzopardi is an historic moment for the local governing body of aquatic sport as it’s the first time a Maltese official is holding such a prestigious position.
“We are incredibly proud to share that for the first time ever, Malta has its first appointed Technical Delegate for the Waterpolo European Championships,” the ASA said in a statement.
“Ms Rita Azzopardi has been officially appointed as Technical Delegate for the Women’s Waterpolo Championship 2026 being held in Funchal, Portugal. A truly historic moment for Maltese aquatic sport!
“ASA President Karl Izzo will continue to serve as vice chairman of the European Aquatics Technical Water Polo Committee (EA TWPC) for the two major upcoming competitions, alongside Mr. Perica Bukic (CRO), Mr. Tamas Molnar (HUN) and Mr. Matjaz Rakovec (SLO).”
In his role of vice chairman of European Aquatics Technical Water Polo Committee, Izzo will also oversee technical delegates for both competitions.
The ASA also announced that referees Massimo Angilleri and Alex De Raffaele will officiate in the major championships.
“Adding to this great news, Mr. Massimo Angilleri has been appointed as a neutral referee for the same championship in Funchal,” the ASA continued.
“Mr. Alex De Raffaele has been appointed as referee for the Men’s Water Polo Championship taking place in Belgrade.
“A huge well done to all four! Their appointments are an indication of Malta’s growing reputation and professionalism within European aquatics.”
