The Malta Karate Federation held its National Championships last month at the De La Salle College, in Vittoriosa.
This year’s event brought together 220 athletes, ranging from six to 44 years of age, who competed across 84 categories in both kata (forms) and kumite (sparring).
Among the participating clubs was Dragon Spirit Karate, a newly inaugurated club based in St Paul’s Bay.
These championships also marked an important milestone for the federation, with 15 newly certified officials achieving Judge status.
Their addition strengthens the technical foundation of karate in Malta and supports the continued growth and professionalism of the sport.
The event served as a testament to excellence at every level – from its organisation to the outstanding performances of athletes and the commitment of their coaches, to the dedication of parents and volunteers who ensured a dynamic and well-supported national event.
This year, the championships were held on newly acquired WKF-approved tatami mats, made possible through the valued support of the Maltese Olympic Committee.
The Malta Karate Federation continues to build on its recent successes.
Earlier this month, Malta placed second at the Small States of Europe Karate Championships held in Cyprus, securing an impressive 11 gold, 8 silver, and 27 bronze medals.
Looking ahead, the Malta Karate Federation will host the next edition of the Small States of Europe Karate Championships in October 2026.
In a statement, the MKF extended its appreciation to SportMalta and the Maltese Olympic Committee for their continued support.
Kenneth Abela, president of the Malta Karate Federation, expressed his gratitude to all those who contributed to the success of the championships and reaffirmed the Federation’s commitment to further elevating the sport.
