Hibernians secured bragging rights in the ‘Derby of the South’ as they overcame the challenge of bottom-placed Tarxien Rainbows.

The two neighbouring rivals produced a fascinating tie which, however, saw the Paolites prevail by a one-goal margin.

Both teams managed to find the net in the first half, but both ‘goals’ were annulled after referee Fyodor Zammit consulted the Football Video Support.

The Paolites thought they took the lead after 12 minutes when Lucas Villela tapped the ball home from close in.

But the ‘goal’ was annulled by referee Zammit after the Football Video Support system revealed that the Hibs forward committed in the build-up to the goal.

Tarxien suffered the same fate on 24 minutes when Alexandre de Barros headed home from a cross by Claudio Henrique.

However, the ‘goal’ was annulled for an offside position of the Tarxien forward.

The stalemate was finally broken on 57 minutes when Cleiton drilled the ball past Tarxien goalkeeper Miguel Spiteri to hand the win to the Paolites, who joined Gżira United at the top of the Bottom 6 standings.
