Over 400 Ħamrun Spartans fans invaded the heart of Dublin on Thursday as they prepared to watch their team in the final UEFA Conference League clash against Shamrock Rovers at the Tallaght Stadium.

The Spartans are bidding to end their historic European campaign in the best possible way, with victory over the Irish champions to not only move up the standings but also gain further financial benefits.

If Ħamrun Spartans beat Shamrock Rovers on Thursday, they will receive over €400,000 that will see their total income from this year’s European adventure break the €5 million threshold, an unprecedented amount of revenue for a Maltese club competing in UEFA club competitions.

Club president Joseph Portelli and the club’s top hierarchy went to meet the Ħamrun Spartans supporters hours before kick-off and whilst thanking them for their constant support, he promised them that he will try and lead the team to another memorable campaign next season.

“I am sorry that this is our last match in the UEFA Conference League this season,” Portelli told the jubilant fans.

“However, I promise you that we will be working hard so that if God wants next year we will again be playing in a League Phase of a UEFA club competition.”

Portelli’s short message was met by a loud roar by the Spartans fans who showed all their appreciation for the efforts of the club president to lead the club to this historic European campaign.

The Ħamrun Spartans president has made no secret of his ambition to help the Spartans reach new heights in Europe and earlier this month he told the SportsDesk podcast that his next goal is to see the team reach the League Phase of the UEFA Conference League.
