Flick backs Garcia to shrug off Espanyol backlash in Barcelona derby

Barcelona boss Hansi Flick on Friday backed Joan Garcia to overcome hostility during this weekend’s derby at Espanyol — the goalkeeper’s first return to the Spanish giant’s cross-town rivals since his summer transfer.

The 24-year-old shot-stopper infuriated Espanyol fans after joining their illustrious local rivals in June for around 26 million euros.

A fiery atmosphere is expected on Saturday for Garcia’s return to the RCDE Stadium, where a win would move the defending Liga champions temporarily seven points clear of Real Madrid at the top.

Espanyol have ramped up security for the game, installing netting behind both goals to prevent the throwing of objects at players and banning entry to any fan carrying or wearing Barcelona symbols.

Asked about the possible impact on Garcia, who has locked down his status as Barcelona’s first-choice goalkeeper since arriving, Flick told reporters he had “no worries” about his player.

“He has the confidence, you believe in his strengths and in his quality, and this is what he wants to show — tomorrow is the best way to do it,” the German coach said.

“He’s always focused on the situation, and you can see it. He played a fantastic half year here in Barcelona, he showed why the decision (to sign him) was right.”

This Barcelona derby, a usually one-sided fixture which Espanyol have not won at home in La Liga since 2007, is set to be tight.

Espanyol — who narrowly escaped relegation last year — are enjoying one of their best seasons in living memory, sitting in fifth after winning their last five league matches.

Flick congratulated his opposite number Manolo Gonzalez, saying that Barcelona would “have to play on our best level” to prevail.
