Gżira United opened their Closing Round commitments in emphatic fashion when they thumped Marsaxlokk 3-0 at the Centenary Stadium.

Brazilian forward Maxuell ‘Samurai’ Maia was the absolute protagonist in Sunday’s Premier League match after scoring a well-taken hat-trick to propel his team to their best possible start to the second part of the league campaign.

After a rather low-key performance in the Opening Round, which saw Gżira United fail to qualify for the Top Six, the Maroons were determined to show their real strength.

Gżira United were off to a flier and they took just 16 minutes to break the stalemate when Maia fired home to put Gżira ahead.

Marsaxlokk looked rattled and Gżira United doubled their lead on the half hour mark through Maia.

Marsaxlokk tried to force their way back into the match with coach Vincenzo Potenza roping in attacking duo Redon Mihana and Jubhel Tsoumou early in the second half in a bid to add more punch to his team’s forward line.

However, Gżira United held firm, and on 71 minutes, Maia wrapped up a very impressive performance when grabbing the third goal to all but kill off the match.
