Gżira United made it two wins out of two in the Closing Round as they overcame Birkirkara in the rearranged fixture at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.
The match was initially scheduled to be played on Friday but was postponed to Sunday due to a technical issue with one of the goalposts at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.
The Maroons produced a fine display that preserved their perfect record and showed that they could be major challengers for a Top 6 berth.
It was Birkirkara who threatened first when Jacques Bayo’s shot hit the side-netting before Alessandro Coppola fired over.
The Stripes continued to create better chances when Stephen Makoma’s shot was blocked by the Gżira defence.
However, Birkirkara’s hopes suffered a blow on 70 minutes when Francisco Lopez was shown a straight card for a violent challenge on Andrew Borg.
Gżira made the most of their numerical advantage as two minutes later they stormed ahead when Bonilla Calderon hit a fine curler from a free-kick that flew into the net.
Maxuell Maia almost made it 2-0 but fired just wide.
However, the Maroons went on to seal the points in stoppage time with a second goal scored by new signing Stasa Basic.
