Mġarr United moved to the brink of history after a 1-1 draw against Swieqi United, leaving them just one win away from securing their first-ever Assikura Women’s League title.

Swieqi managed to frustrate the league leaders for long stretches and took the lead through Sara Saliba, but Maia Debono responded for Mġarr to ensure the points were shared.

While not a dominant display, Mġarr once again showed composure and control, taking another decisive step towards the championship.

Elsewhere, Hibernians produced a strong performance, securing a 5-0 victory over San Ġwann.

Olivia Nazarko netted twice, alongside goals from Calista Schechinger, Kayleigh Chetcuti and Nicole Sciberras, as Hibernians overwhelmed their opponents with attacking efficiency and intensity throughout the match.

Birkirkara also enjoyed a strong outing, defeating Valletta 5-0.

Momo Ueda was the standout performer with a hat-trick, while Kleydina Monteiro and Ruth Steer-Chetham added the other goals in a controlled and clinical display that further solidified Birkirkara’s position in the standings.

Valletta, meanwhile, continue to struggle at both ends of the pitch.

With two matchdays remaining, Mġarr United sit comfortably at the top with 44 points, ahead of Swieqi United on 33 and Hibernians on 31. Birkirkara follow on 22 points, while San Ġwann and Valletta remain at the bottom with 6 and 2 points respectively.

The title race now appears all but decided, with Mġarr needing just one more victory to crown a historic campaign.

STANDINGS (after MD16)
Mġarr United 44; Swieqi United 33; Hibernians 31; Birkirkara 22; San Ġwann 6; Valletta 2.

Women’s league title within reach for Mġarr United in Matchday 17

The Assikura Women’s League title race could be decided this weekend as Mġarr United stand just one win away from securing their first-ever league crown.

League leaders Mġarr, currently on 44 points, will have the opportunity to seal the title on Saturday when they face bottom-placed Valletta at the Charles Abela Stadium.

On paper, it represents a favourable opportunity given Valletta’s struggles throughout the campaign, with just two points collected so far.

However, managing the psychological aspect of the occasion will be just as important as the tactical execution for Mġarr, who have built their season on consistency and control.

Before that, attention turns to Thursday’s clash between San Ġwann and Swieqi United at the Centenary Stadium.

Swieqi, currently second on 33 points, know that anything less than victory would effectively end any remaining mathematical hopes of catching Mġarr.

They face a San Ġwann side rooted near the bottom of the table, but one that will be aiming to respond after a heavy defeat in the previous round.

Friday’s fixture sees Birkirkara take on Hibernians at the Victor Tedesco Stadium in what is arguably the standout matchup of the round.

Hibernians come into the game on the back of an emphatic 5-0 win and will be looking to maintain momentum as they chase second place, sitting just two points behind Swieqi.

Birkirkara, meanwhile, will aim to build on their solid victory over Valletta.
