Joseph Portelli was cheered by fans of Nocerina Calcio at the end of a Serie D match last Sunday.
The Ħamrun Spartans president has made no secret in recent months of his aspirations to buy an Italian club, and in January, the Times of Malta had revealed that Portelli was in advanced talks with Nocerina Calcio.
Last weekend, Portelli, together with Spartans CEO Marcel Bonnici and Operations manager Eric Saliba, travelled to Italy to hold talks with the Nocerina top hierarchy.
On Sunday, Portelli attended Nocerina’s home clash against Budoni.
At the end of the match, which finished in a 1-1 draw a group of fans approached Portelli’s car and warmly greeted him as he was leaving the stadium.
Sources have confirmed to the Times of Malta that negotiations between Portelli and the Italian side are ongoing and the Gozitan businessman is hopeful a conclusion will be reached in the coming weeks.
“We are close to reaching an agreement with the Nocerina president, and hopefully in the next few weeks the deal will go through,” Portelli told Italian media.
“There are still a lot of things that need to be done, and there is a lot of paperwork involved, but hopefully we can start a new adventure here.”
