Malta Handball Association to host Kindergarten Handball Coaching Course

The Malta Handball Association will be hosting a Kindergarten Handball Coaching Course between March 28 and 29, as part of its continued commitment to grassroots development and coach education.

The course will be led by Carlos Prieto, one of European handball’s most respected figures in elite sport and youth development.

Following a distinguished professional playing career that included three EHF Champions League titles and an Olympic bronze medal, Carlos Prieto transitioned into education and youth development.

He founded the Share & Play programme, using sport as a vehicle for personal growth, teamwork, and healthy lifestyles, before establishing the Athletes Inspire Children NGO.

Through this organisation, Prieto has led European Commission–backed projects focused on social inclusion through physical education.

An EHF Expert and ambassador, Prieto has delivered training courses, workshops, and mentoring programmes across Europe, while also lecturing and developing curricula in sport sciences.

His work uniquely bridges elite sporting experience with educational innovation, empowering young people both on and off the court.

This course forms part of the Malta Handball Association’s structured grassroots strategy under the EHF Masterplan and the Grassroots Charter signed with the European Handball Federation.

It further reinforces the Association’s long-term vision to introduce handball at an early age through high-quality, age-appropriate coaching.

The initiative also builds on the Association’s recent participation in an international handball grassroots convention, where representatives engaged in best-practice sharing programmes and development models.

Key insights and takeaways from this convention will be shared with the wider Maltese handball community, ensuring that local coaches, educators and clubs benefit directly from the latest developments in grassroots handball.

Commenting on the initiative, Daniel Tabone, President of the Malta Handball Association, said: “Our commitment is not just to introduce handball from a very young age, but to do so in the right way – with fully qualified coaches who understand child development, learning through play, and safe sporting environments.

“Hosting a course led by someone of Carlos Prieto’s calibre reflects our determination to raise standards at every level. This follows similar initiatives we have undertaken, including bringing EHF expert Allan Heine to Malta earlier this year, and underlines our long-term investment in coach education and grassroots growth.”
