Many people posted glowing tributes towards Cushieri who was described as a great character with a ‘big heart’.
Cuschieri’s current club, Qrendi FC, issued a statement to pay tribute to their player.
“Everyone at Qrendi F.C. is deeply saddened by the passing of our former player, Danjel Cuschieri,” the club said in a statement.
“On behalf of the club, we extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”
During his career, Cuschieri also represented Dingli Swallows in the youth leagues and their president, Pierre Miceli, lauded the 19-year-old for his passion and dedication during his short career.
“How much we should thank God for what we have and what we achieved,” Miceli wrote on his social media.
“This morning, Danjel Cuschieri passed to eternal life at a very young age. Daniel was full of energy and was a former player with the Minors team of Dingli Swallows, where he won promotion with us last season.
“When you love something, keep doing it, as that is what Danjel used to do. From Marsaskala, he used to come up to Dingli every day for training, and when we used to have matches, many times I used to accompany him back home.
“I will never forget you, your memory will always remain in my heart.
“Sincere condolences to his family, may he rest in peace.”
