Player in hospital, two others hurt following melee in U-17 match

One player ended up in hospital and two others were injured following a scuffle between players in an U-17 match between Żabbar St Patrick and Naxxar Lions on Sunday.

The Malta Football Association (Malta FA) has condemned the scenes in a statement about the match played at the Dingli ground.

The MFA said a Naxxar player was hit by a Żabbar player during a scuffle involving both sets of players.

That player required hospital treatment. Żabbar officials told Times of Malta two of their players were also hurt in the ensuing melee.

Sources told Times of Malta that paramedics got involved to provide medical assistance.

Following this incident, the match was stopped, and the referee decided to abandon the match.

The injured player was taken to the hospital by ambulance to receive further medical assistance.

In a statement, the MFA said that it condemns any form of violence and unsporting behaviour as it goes against the fundamental values of football.

“The Malta FA strongly condemns any form of violence, altercation, or unsporting behaviour on or around the field of play,” the MFA said.

“Such conduct goes against the fundamental values of football, including respect, discipline, and fair play, which the Association works continuously to promote across all levels of the game, particularly within youth football.

“The Association confirms that the incident is being investigated by the Police and by the Malta FA’s disciplinary committees.

“The Malta FA has opened an investigation into the incident in order to establish the full facts surrounding what occurred. All relevant information will be reviewed in accordance with the Malta FA regulations and disciplinary procedures.

“Following the conclusion of this process, the Malta FA will take any disciplinary action deemed necessary in line with its statutes and regulations.

“The Malta Football Association reiterates its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the sport and ensuring that football environments remain safe, respectful, and appropriate for players, officials, and supporters.”
