Newly crowned champions Mġarr United continued their dominant run in the league as they cruised to a commanding 6–1 victory over San Ġwann, maintaining their unbeaten record with just two matches left to play.
Mġarr were in control throughout the encounter, with Yanina Mendez opening the scoring before Maria Hernandez stole the spotlight with a superb hat-trick. Further goals from Veronique Mifsud, on her return from a long-term injury, and Paula Ciappara completed another emphatic performance by the champions.
San Ġwann managed to pull one back through Rodianne Zerafa, but it proved little more than a consolation on a difficult afternoon for the side.
The match also marked a period of transition for San Ġwann. It was their first game following the departure of coach Julian Camilleri, while long-time captain Annabelle Rapa has also stepped away from the game, retiring alongside teammate Kirstie Vella.
Meanwhile, Hibernians kept their hopes of finishing second alive with a resounding 7–0 victory over Valletta.
Sylvia Kabene and Yolande Attard were the standout performers, both helping themselves to hat-tricks in a one-sided encounter. Shana Farrugia also got on the scoresheet as the Paolites produced one of their most convincing displays of the season.
The result allowed Hibernians to close the gap on Swieqi United, who suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Birkirkara.
In a tightly contested match, Kleydiana Monteiro struck the decisive goal to hand Birkirkara another positive result as they continue to show steady improvement in the latter stages of the campaign. The win lifted the Stripes to 28 points in the standings.
With two rounds remaining, Mġarr United lead the table on 50 points, well clear at the summit.
Swieqi remain second on 36 points, but their advantage over Hibernians has been cut to just two points, setting up a crucial direct clash between the two sides in the next round.
Birkirkara sit fourth on 28 points, while San Ġwann and Valletta occupy the bottom places with five and two points respectively.
STANDINGS
Mġarr United 50; Swieqi United 36; Hibernians 34; Birkirkara 28; San Ġwann 5; Valletta 2.

Mġarr look to extend unbeaten run, second place race heats up
With Mġarr United already crowned champions, attention now shifts to the battle for second place as the Women’s League enters its final stages next weekend.
The highlight fixture comes on Saturday, when Hibernians host Swieqi United at the Dingli Ground in what promises to be a decisive clash in the race for the runners-up spot.
Swieqi currently occupy second place with 36 points, but their advantage has been reduced to just two points after last weekend’s narrow 1-0 defeat to Birkirkara, where Kleydiana Monteiro scored the decisive goal.
Hibernians, on the other hand, come into the match full of confidence following a commanding 7–0 victory over Valletta. Sylvia Kabene and Yolande Attard led the charge in that match, helping the Paolites close the gap and set up a direct showdown that could significantly reshape the standings.
Victory for Hibernians would see them leapfrog Swieqi into second place with only one round remaining, while Swieqi know that a positive result would strengthen their grip on the runners-up position.
Meanwhile, newly crowned champions Mġarr United will look to continue their remarkable unbeaten run when they face Birkirkara on Friday night at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.
Mġarr extended their dominant campaign last weekend with an emphatic 6–1 win over San Ġwann, with Maria Hernandez stealing the show by netting a hat-trick while Yanina Mendez, Veronique Mifsud and Paula Ciappara also found the net.
Birkirkara will be aiming to build on their recent improvement after defeating Swieqi, a result that lifted them to 28 points and reinforced their positive momentum in the latter stages of the season.
The weekend’s action concludes on Saturday evening when San Ġwann take on Valletta at the Charles Abela Stadium in Mosta.
San Ġwann will be looking to bounce back after their heavy defeat to Mġarr in what was also their first match following the departure of coach Julian Camilleri.
Valletta, still searching for their first victory of the campaign, will be hoping to end the season on a more positive note after last weekend’s difficult outing against Hibernians.
