The session, delivered both in class and on the football pitch by Leeds United Football Club coaches, commenced with an introduction on the importance of creating a stronger network for Maltese football stakeholders, especially coaches, so they can share ideas, learn from one another, and support each other through continuous professional development.
Coach Laurie Griffin of Leeds United FC led much of the discussion, drawing on his wide international experience in coaching and player development.
A central message throughout the session was that good coaching starts with understanding the individual needs of players and creating a safe, positive, and enjoyable environment in which they can develop.
Coach Griffin stressed that coaching philosophy should be simple, clear, and rooted in strong values such as hard work, communication, teamwork, leadership, and personal development.
The session also highlighted the importance of session planning. Coaches were encouraged to design training with clear objectives and intended outcomes, while keeping their communication and instructions simple and effective.
Reflection was another major theme, with participants asked to think about their own coaching practices, how they plan, how they communicate, and how they can improve.
Group discussion formed an important part of the event, allowing participants to share their own thoughts, philosophies, and experiences.
The role of coaches as role models was emphasized, particularly in helping players develop qualities that transfer beyond football into education, work, and daily life.
Overall, the session promoted continuous learning, honest feedback, collaboration among coaches, and ongoing self-improvement.
It encouraged coaches to reflect deeply on their own environment, philosophy, and methods, with the aim of becoming more effective in supporting player development.
