Pace Cocks denies Valletta at the death

Valletta missed out on the chance to keep up the pressure with the league pacesetters as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Naxxar Lions.

Valletta had started brightly and on 21 minutes Andrea Zammit could have fired them ahead but his shot was saved by Mathias Debono.

But the Naxxar keeper could do nothing three minutes later when Diogo Tavares burst through and slid the ball past the onrushing Debono.

Valletta’s hopes of a victory were severely hampered on 63 minutes when they were reduced to ten men.

The Naxxar clan asked for a Football Video Support review following a strong challenge by Thaylora Aldama on Joao Victor.

The referee decided to upgrade the yellow card he had shown to Aldama to red to leave the Citizens with a player less.

Naxxar had to wait till the 87th minute to threaten when Montero’s shot drifted wide.

But still the Lions were not to be denied as in the first minute of stoppage time, when the Citizens failed to clear the ball away and in came Neil Pace Cocks who fired home.

Naxxar could have won it with the last kick of the match when Edson Farias’s shot hit the upright.
