Treble-chasing Mġarr headline women’s cup semi-finals

Domestic action resumes this weekend with the semi-finals of the Assikura Women’s Knockout, following the international break that saw Malta competing in the 2027 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

Both semi-finals are set for Sunday. Valletta face Birkirkara, while Hibernians take on Mġarr United in what promises to be a high-quality encounter.

The winners will book their place in the final, scheduled for Friday, May 1, at the Centenary Stadium.

Mġarr United enter the weekend as clear favourites as they continue their push for an historic treble.

The Greens have already secured the Jubilee Cup, defeating Hibernians at the National Stadium, and clinched their first-ever league title without losing a single match.

Their only defeat this season came in the Super Cup final against Swieqi United back in September.

Driven by a formidable defensive line and a remarkable attacking firepower, Mġarr have been a level above the rest throughout the campaign.

Hibernians, meanwhile, are desperate to end their trophy drought.

The Paolites have lost four finals in the past four seasons – three in this competition, including last season’s against Mġarr and one in the Jubilee Cup.

This time, they will be aiming to turn the tables and finish the season on a high.

In the other semi-final, Birkirkara arrive in strong form after a remarkable second half of the season.

They will be looking to carry that momentum into the knockout stage as they target silverware.

Standing in their way are Valletta, who finished bottom of the league but now have an opportunity for an upset.
