Sliema Wanderers agree terms with Branko Nisevic to take over as new head coach

Sliema Wanderers have agreed terms with Serbian coach Branko Nisevic to take over at the Premier League club. However, any deal will not be finalised until a new committee is elected during the club’s AGM next month.

Branko Nisevic is the favourite to be unveiled as the new coach of Sliema Wanderers.

The Wanderers have turned to the Serbian coach to try and bounce back from a disappointing 2025-26 season and an agreement is now in place between the two parties.

The Blues have experienced a very disappointing campaign as despite the hefty investment during last summer’s transfer window they were beaten in the final of the Jubillee Cup and then suffered a surprising defeat to Swieqi United in the FA Trophy and failed to challenge for the league title after slipping in the Bottom Six in the Closing Round.

After parting ways with coach Paul Zammit midway through the season, the Blues appointed Pablo Doffo as interim coach until the end of the campaign but have now decided to appoint a new first team coach.

Nisevic has emerged as the leading contender for the post after the Serbian coach parted ways with Hibernians in March.

Negotiations between the Sliema Wanderers’ top hierarchy and Nisevic have been ongoing for the past few days and an agreement in principle was reached on Wednesday.

However, sources told Times of Malta that no agreement can be sealed as yet as the Wanderers must first elect a new committee during the club’s Annual General Meeting which is scheduled for the first week of June.

Meanwhile, Doffo on Thursday bid farewell to Sliema Wanderers and thanked the club’s administration for the opportunity.

“My journey with Sliema has come to an end and I would like to sincerely thank everyone at the club for the opportunity, the trust, and the support from day one. It has been a privilege to be part of such a historic club,” Doffo wrote

“A special thank you to the technical staff and the committee for all the hard work, commitment, and daily support throughout this period. Working alongside you has been a great experience both professionally and personally.

“Most importantly, I want to thank all the players. Thank you for your commitment, your mentality, your effort every single day, and for all the moments we shared together. Football creates special bonds, and I will always remember the dressing room, the laughs, the difficult moments, and the way we stayed united throughout.

“”I leave with nothing but respect, gratitude, and great memories.

“Wishing the club and everyone involved nothing but success for the future.”
