During the past few weeks, there have been growing calls from the club fans who wanted a change in leadership after a disappointing 2025-26 season, which saw the club fail to challenge for the major domestic honours.
The Birkirkara supremo had been at the helm of the club for the past five years and during his time at the club, led the Stripes to an FA Trophy success in 2023 and reached three other major finals.
“Club President Mr. Michael Valenzia has tendered his resignation with immediate effect, allowing the club to move forward with the process of electing its new president,” the club said in a statement.
“Mr. Valenzia was appointed as the club’s president in May 2021. During his five-year spell leading the club, Birkirkara FC secured the FA Trophy in 2023, reached a further three major finals, and successfully obtained the UEFA License in every season throughout his presidency.
“The club would like to thank Mr. Valenzia for his commitment, dedication, and service throughout his tenure.”
Following his resignation, Valenzia wrote a letter to the Birkirkara fans, where he emphasised that he put the club above everything else.
“For the past five years, I have had the greatest honour of serving as president of this great football club,” Valenzia said in a statement.
“Giving my all to Birkirkara FC and its supporters has been one fo the proudest experiences of my life. Throughout my presidency, I always placed Birkirkara first, above everything else.
“Football is built on moments, memories and passion. Winning the FA Trophy in 2023 will forever remain one of the proudest moments of my time as president.
“Equally, helping to strengthen the club off the pitch, improving its structures and ensuring the highest UEFA standards to secure long-term stability and continued participation in European competitions are achievements I will always look back on with great pride.”
Valenzia said that in recent months he listened carefully to the voices of many supporters and, having reflected deeply on the last five years, he understands that many of the fans now wish to see change, and he fully respects it.
“This is your club, your badge, and your future,” Valenzia added.
“With immediate effect, I am resigning as president of Birkirkara FC, allowing the club to move forward and choose its next president. I sincerely wish the club every success it deserves in the years ahead.”
Valenzia concluded his letter by thanking all the ‘loyal people who stood behind me in this journey’.
“To the supporters, thank you. Without you, football clubs are nothing. Serving you and representing Birkirkara FC has been one of the greatest honours and privileges of my life. I will forever be grateful for your passion and support.”
Following Valenzia’s resignation, the Stripes will now look to elect a new president.
Dr Chris Cardona is the favourite to fill his void after last week, he confirmed to the Times of Malta, his desire to form part of the Birkirkara FC committee.
