The Stripes have been looking to appoint a new committee after earlier this week, Michael Valenzia decided to step down from his post of Birkirkara FC president.
Valenzia’s decision came after a growing call from the club fans for a change at the helm of the club.
The Stripes are coming from a disappointing season, which saw them fail to challenge for any of the major honours in domestic football.
Contacted by Times of Malta, Dr Cardona expressed his satisfaction at being handed the opportunity to lead Birkirkara FC.
“I am honoured and humbled by the unanimous trust placed in me by the members of Birkirkara Football Club tonight,” Dr Cardona said.
“This mandate belongs to every supporter, every player, every coach, every volunteer and every family that has stood by this club through everything.”
Dr Cardona said that the next step is that a new committee structure will be set up and confirmed that Gordon Spiteri and Michael Spiteri will again be part of the club’s administration.
“Together with Gordon Spiteri and Michael Spiteri, we will shortly be proposing a full Committee structure for the formal approval of the club’s members,” he said.
“The complete composition will be announced once that process has been properly concluded in the coming days.”
The new Birkirkara president said that in the coming days the new committee will start working hard to try and put the club on solid foundations.
“Our immediate priorities are clear,” he said.
“We will be conducting a full financial and legal review of the club’s affairs from day one. We have institutional partnerships ready to be activated immediately that will generate new commercial revenue for the club.
“We are committed to ensuring that all football operations for next season are addressed without delay – player contracts, coaching staff, and squad planning are all urgent matters that we will be handling as a priority.
“We also have two significant development projects on the table for the club’s property assets, which we intend to progress properly and transparently through the correct legal and commercial processes. There is a lot to do, and we are ready to start.”
