Ħamrun winger Joseph Mbong, Mġarr forward Yulya Carella crowned MFA Player of the Year

Joseph Mbong and Yulya Carella won the Player of the Year Award for the season 2025-26 during the Malta FA Awards lon Tuesday night.

The local governing body of football hosted a Gala Night to honour all the top performers of the outgoing season.

As expected, the most-awaited awards of the night were those of the Player of the Year award.

Here, Ħamrun Spartans winger Joseph Mbong was declared as the winner after a fine season with the former Malta champions.

For Mbong, this was the first time that he won this prestigious award and perfectly crowns a fine campaign during which he helped the Spartans secure an historic qualification to the League Phase of the UEFA Conference League.

On the other hand, the women’s award went to Mġarr United forward Yulya Carella.

The 21-year-old Malta international enjoyed an impressive campaign, helping her club Mġarr United to an historic treble of Jubilee Cup, the women’s league championship and the Knock Out competition.

During the night, the Malta FA honoured the most promising player.

Valletta midfielder Jake Azzopardi, scorer of one of the goals that helped Valletta win the FA Trophy last Saturday, won the award.

Floriana, the newly-crowned Premier League champions, bagged two honours on the night.

Forward Nicolas Varela won the Foreign Player of the Year Award while Daniel Portela secured the Coach of the Year Award.

During the night, Valletta midfielder Sava Radic was awarded the President’s Award for his heroic act during the FA Trophy quarter-final against Ħamrun Spartans.

Radic came to the rescue of Ħamrun midfielder Nicolas Garcia who suffered a serious head injury and the Serbian’s intervention was crucial to save the life of the Ħamrun midfielder

During the night, the Malta FA also inducted Freddie Mizzi into its Hall of Fame following his distinguished career with Hibernians and the Malta national team.

BOV National Amateur League 2 Best Player: Ryan Dalli (Kalkara United).

Fair Play Award: Swieqi United Football Club.

The Gozitan Achievement Award: Benjamin Hili (Swieqi United).

Foreign Player of the Year: Federico Nicolás Varela Escudero (Floriana).

The  President’s Award: Sava Radić (Valletta).

BOV Challenge League Top Scorer: Arthur Felippe Stelmach Santana (Pietà Hotspurs), 18 goals

BOV Challenge League Top Scorer: Cristhyan Noto Souza (Mġarr United) 18 goals.

BOV National Amateur League 1 Top Scorer: Precious Uche-chukwu Nwankwo (Attard) 32 goals.

BOV National Amateur League 2 Top Scorer: Ronaldinho Nathaniel Daley (Dingli Swallows) 20 goals.

Assikura Women’s League Top Scorer: Salamatu Abdulai (Swieqi United) 22 goals.

BOV Challenge League Best Player: Paul Lapira (Birżebbuġa St Peter’s).

Coach of the Year: Augusto Daniel Portela da Silva (Floriana).

Best Goal of the Year: Brenner Armando Melo dos Santos (Xewkija Tigers vs Melita – FA Trophy).

Women’s Footballer of the Year: Yulya Carella (Mġarr United).

Men’s Footballer of the Year:  Joseph Mbong (Ħamrun Spartans).
