A season packed with competitive action
Summer 2025 brings a packed calendar of local and international fixtures, and the surge of interest in sports betting in Malta reflects just how closely fans are tracking each event, from athletics meetings to football tournaments.
The Maltese Olympic Committee is coordinating national readiness for various disciplines with the view to have Maltese athletes compete both at home and abroad during the course of this season.
Football will once again be at the forefront of the summer of fixtures.
The Malta Football Association has recently confirmed a host of national team fixtures due to take place, aiming to test the country’s finest to their limits as the squad gear up to the qualifying phase for their respective tournaments. The Maltese football calendar is therefore set to continue for the remainder of August.
Water polo and athletics draw international interest
Water polo is one of Malta’s summer sports. In outdoor pools, throughout the Maltese Islands, club matches will be held whilst also keeping track of international water polo tournaments organized by World Aquatics.
From the athletics track, European Athletics Championships are soon due to take place in the continent.
As several Maltese athletes are likely to be participating in these various continental athletics events, their respective performance could affect their chance of being picked for future national events.
Rugby and sports tourism add further depth
The Malta rugby fixtures due for late June and July are creating a lot of interest amongst the local rugby community.
The Maltese rugby union have been trying to promote the summer game and it seems that their efforts are starting to show as attendances for recent matches have been very good.
Tourism related to sports is also another factor that’s growing.
VisitMalta speaks of summer sports events and how these can attract more of the international market, given Malta’s climate and the compactness of the island which makes it an ideal host for a number of regional events.
What the summer tells us about Maltese sport
Activity throughout the summer extended to football, water polo, athletics and even to the start of the rugby season in Malta. The Maltese sporting scene may therefore be not only widening but also becoming more professional.
