Fenerbahce president gets jail term for inciting illegal gambling

The outgoing president of Turkish football giants Fenerbahce was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison on Thursday for “inciting illegal gambling,” state news agency Anadolu reported.

Turkish-American sports executive and businessman Sadettin Saran was accused of broadcasting advertisements for illegal betting sites on a video platform owned by his holding company.

Saran argued that the advertisements were filmed inside sports venues and not deliberately broadcast by his online platform, S Sport.

His sentence does not include a warrant for his immediate detention and Saran has confirmed he will appeal.

One of Saran’s brothers and business partners received the same sentence, along with a fine of 562,500 Turkish lira ($12,200), according to Anadolu.

When contacted by AFP, neither Fenerbahce nor the S Sport platform immediately responded.

Elected Fenerbahce president in September 2025, Saran is due to step down in June.
