Malta place fourth after shoot-out defeat to Luxembourg in bronze medal play-off at EuroHockey

The Malta Hockey national team missed out on a place on the podium after losing to Luxembourg in the bronze medal play-off.

Malta’s national hockey team concluded its EuroHockey Championship Qualifier II 2026 campaign in fourth place after losing 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out to Luxembourg.

The match ended 1-1 after regulation time.

Luxembourg took the lead in the third minute through a penalty corner converted by Frederic Schmit, while Malta equalised in the 24th minute thanks to a goal by Christ Agius.

Despite a determined performance from both sides, neither team managed to find a winner during regulation time.

In the penalty shoot-out, Luxembourg proved more accurate, securing a 4-3 victory to claim third place.

On their part, Malta had to settle for fourth after producing several positive performances throughout the tournament.
